Spring Cleaning: Purge Your Closet

Come on say it with me…”out with the old and in with the new”. When you finally  decide to pour yourself a drink, put on your favorite playlist and dive into the purging of your closet don’t look at it as a chore but rather as a new beginning.

Of course you don’t want to give up 3 hours on your Saturday to really go through your closet, because we all know its a hassle. However, I’ve put together a list of 5 things you should keep top of mind when giving your closet a full makeover!

1.Turn A New Page: You’ll never know where to start if you are staring at piles and piles of clothing. So where do you start? By emptying your entire closet. Once everything is out of your closet you have blank slate to work with and you will see that you automatically start thinking differently. Don’t think of your closet as storage, but more of a place where you like to be. Organize your closet in a way that makes it easier for you to find what you need from day to day. If you have a bigger closet why not decorate it to your liking. Make it apart of your room, not a place where you close the door to hide the mess that’s your wardrobe.

2. Don’t Second Guess: Always go with your first instinct, if not you will most likely begin to get sentimental and you’ll find yourself adding items back to the clutter. To minimize the items you place back into the closet, create three piles on the floor; a pile to keep, another to donate, and one to toss. Don’t complicate it, take a look at the item and give it a “yes” or “no”.  The purpose here is to narrow down the pieces in your closet that makes you look and feel your best, while at the same time freeing up space.

3.Reminisce With The Piece: There is no doubt that we create an attachment with clothing we own. But it’s important to remember when cleaning out your closet you have to leave room for the new you to develop. As you grow and change into a new person your style and fashion also evolves. This also gives you a chance to go out and shop for pieces that will inspire you in new ways.

4.Try & Toss: “I’ll keep it, workout and it’ll fit” stop kidding yourself, you haven’t worn that piece in years! I know you’re still stuck on the fact that you use to look good in that outfit. As much as we love it, we have to be realistic and know this outfit can be replaced with a new trend, and a outfit that you will love even more because it fits you much better. Once the fit is right, you’ll gain a new sense of confidence.

5.Keep It Simple: Once you work through your closet, you will soon be able to see what works for you. The hard part is over, now you can look through your closet and see what pieces you can match together to create new looks.Give yourself a chance to go shopping for versatile pieces that you can now add and expand your closet.

In a world that never stops and we are constantly on the go, so why add wardrobe stress to the list of your other worries.

Getting dressed in the morning for a work meeting, running errands, or whatever other occasion the day holds, getting dressed should always be effortless and fun. Cleaning out your closet will give you a sense of relief every morning.

After you have completed the purge, you will open those closet doors to a new you, with much more clarity and a better fashion sense to take on the world!

Happy Cleaning!
